British Independent Service Reviews

  • Mar 3, 2016

In the process of selling a ultra low mileage like new barely used jaguar, the out of area buyer blindly selected british independent service to perform a pre purchase inspection by looking at the internet. This was the final step for the buyer after spending a week researching, asking questions, being provided all requested documentation, having the jag smog tested, and performing a half day test ride and personal inspection. This jag has never been driven in any weather, is maintained indoors and covered in the best of practices, and the few thousand miles on the jag were accumulated in highway trips to nevada and palm springs. The car has been babied, oil & filter changed every 1,500 miles, and driven gently by only one senior car collector. The jag was presented to charles herchert Garage owner) personally and he promptly raised the hood, then put it on his hoist, using a flashlight to quickly peer at several areas. Absolutely no wheels were removed, dipsticks, reservoirs or any other inspection took place. When charles shined his flashlight through the wheel spokes, he glanced at the brake calipers for literally 3 seconds. I asked him how things were looking and reached for his flashlight to see if the actual brake pads could really be seen by not removing the wheels - at this point, charles grabbed the flashlight from me, and yelled at me in a threatening voice demanding i "go up front in the office and stay away from my car until he says he is finished". He continued "he works for the buyer and not Me) and i need to stay away!" he then proceeded to very aggressively shout at me that "the water pump is bad, both head gaskets are leaking, and all four brakes Pads & rotors) need replacing because "they are metal - to - metal". I started to step out of the repair bay into the outside driveway while questioning him how any of this is possible with a car that had 6,000 original miles? Charles yelled for me "to get out of the area and wait for him up front!". I did and within less than five minutes charles walked through the front door leaving my car sitting in the street in front of his garage, handed my keys to me and said "all set". From the time i pulled in to his garage to the time i drove off was 14 minutes! after a week of continuous and positive communication with the buyer, i have not heard from him since the visit to charles' garage, and he is not responding to my inquiries. Obviously, the deal has been killed by british independent seevices, and in particular by charles herchert, the owner. This has cost me plenty in time spent as well as hard costs. This jag is a beautiful automobile and this is just not sitting well with me. So, i had the car inspected by someone i know and trust. Guess what? The brake pads are like new and show literally unmeasurable wear! estimated 25,000 to 40,000 life remaining depending of course on driving habits. The "water pump failure" is simply non-existent; but there is a small dried-up drip of armour all on the aluminum front engine cover ... Been there forever. And the "two leaking head gaskets"? ... These turn out to each be small drops of fresh un-used engine oil that was spilled during oil changes and migrated to the rear of the intake valley ultimately collecting as a drip at the rear edge of each cylinder head. This engine is fully covered by a decorative shroud and such spillage is not visible without removing components.) also noteworthy is that this car has always been parked on a pure white ceramic tile floor and not once has a drop of any lubricant or coolant been experienced. This jag has been hand washed only twice in its entire life. The engine has never been cleaned. The engine compartment was sprayed with a heavy coating of armour all when new, and that is it. So, at this juncture i am unfortunately relegated to seeking any and all remedies available. Then proceed to file a california bureau of automotive repair complaint, together with a better business bureau complaint as well. I've already sent these details to a litigation law firm - they have connections with local television media so maybe this will make an interesting and helpful consumer alert story as well. Looking to some of the online blogs and reviews, i am not a lone victim in the scam - others have similar stories. In conclusion, i have no way of knowing if charles commits these acts to line his pockets by recommending work that is not needed, or, if he is simply incompetent. Either way, his actions have caused a serious injustice to occur to both the buyer and the seller in this instance. Very very sad situation.
