I made a mistake in trusting someone else to come through for me which I rarely do. Mr barnes agreed to send me a contract with pictures which he did not. Now obviously this action was on purpose so he would not have to pay me. If you ever cross paths with him, you must treat him like a thief with money. He did get me my lights back after great suffering, loss of business, and other bs that I had to deal with. I cared more about the lights than the rental fee but he is not trustworthy in any respect.
Brian david barnes does not actually reside in durham anymore, he relocated to new York. To anyone that he tries to rent from in the future, be aware that he doesn’t drive and won’t help you if it involves using a car. He tries to make himself sound like he resides in durham nc. I will list the addresses I know, links I know and phone numbers. I have many more phone numbers and other contact information if anyone is curious.
Brian Barnes acted nice and presentable in the beginning of our encounter. He originally contacted me through craigslist to rent 7 uplights for a wedding in durham. I gave him a better deal on 10 uplights with all the cords and connections for the wedding. After we agreed on a price I told him that I would come setup the lights and he would break them down and bring them back over the phone. I arrived at the wedding venue around 2:50 to setup the lights and he was supposed to arrive 3pm. I had the lights setup and ready to go and barnes was still nowhere to be seen. He texted me and said he was running late. I left the contract and lights with him and he agreed to take pictures and send them to me. I should have known when I didn’t get any pictures that I would need to treat him like a inexperienced thief and go break down the lights and charge him more for the fuel and time after my show. After he was ‘packing up’ he texted me and told me he was on his way to drop the lights off. I waited until around 3 am and he never showed up. I needed the lights for another wedding that was happening the next day and he didn’t respond to any of my texts or calls. Almost a week later he finally gets up with me and tells me he lost my phone. My contract stipulates that for every day he doesn’t return my lights after the rental date its 100 dollars a day. Technically he owes me 100 dollars for the rental and 600 for the late fees and my inconvenience. I got my lights back on Thursday, 6 days after the event. He claimed that he left his phone in the uber car that he used to get around in durham since he doesn’t actually live in the area. So not only did I not get the rental fee, I lost money in renting lights for my wedding and had to deal with trying to track him down to get my gear back.
I had the paperwork to file in my hands at the magistrate’s office and the courthouse. He contacted me right before I drove over there to file it. He also said he was going to compensate me for my trouble. I didn’t put much stock in anything he said although I did get my lights back. This morning he texted me a long message saying that my incompetence is why he doesn’t feel sorry for me anymore. I told him that feeling sorry for me or not isn’t the point. He owes me money either way. He isn’t going to pay and probably never intended to. I will never get what I was owed for the colossal amount of trouble I went through after dealing with brian barnes. If you do do business with him in the future, don’t trust anything he says or does. Make him pay extra, check his work, and treat him like a thief. He is going to act like he is a nice Christian business man at first. Get paid first and don’t let him talk you into anything. He will take what he can when he can. I will never get my money back, but at least people will know what happened when I did business with him.
I’ve never had a rental issue like this before and it is the first time I haven’t had a signed contract in my hand with the fee before letting some gear be used. That was my mistake.
