UNDERCOVER OPERATION #2

32. On or about April 10,2014, an undercover operator with the Bureau ("operator") took

the Bureau's 2000 Pontiac to Brake Masters #135. The front brake pads on the Bureau-

documented vehicle were in need of replacement and the ~J cylinder spark plug was defective,

causing the check engine light to illuminate. The operator told a male employee that she wanted

the brakes and illuminated check engine light inspected and presented him with a wupon from

Brake Masters # 135 for a free brake inspection and check engine lamp inspection. The operator

signed and received a copy of a written estimate and left the facility.

33. At approximately 1420 hours that same day, the operator received a call from

Respondent's employee, "Bo". Bo told the operator that the front brake pads were badly worn

and needed replacement and that the front brake rotors needed replacement as well. The operator

told Bo she would call him back. At approximately 1435 hours, the operator called the facility

and asked Bo if they could resurface the rotors instead of replacing them. Bo claimed that he

9

could not resurface the rotors because tbey would be too thin after machining. Bo also told the

operator that the check engine light was illuminated because ofa diagnostic trouble code for a #1

engine misfire and that they would require an additional $98 for a diagnosis of the check engine

light. Bo stated that the repairs and diagnosis would cost $532.43, which the operator authorized.

34. On or about April II, 2014, the operator received a voice mail message from

Respondent's employee, "Mike", requesting a return phone call. At approximately 1045 hours,

the operator called the facility and spoke with Mike. Mike told the operator that all six spark

plugs were worn out and were the incorrect type for the vehicle, the coil pack was burnt and had

high resistance, and the spark plug wires were bad. Mike claimed that all of these parts would

need to be replaced in order to correct the illuminated check engine light. Mike gave the operator

a revised estimate price of$l, 137.73 for the repairs, which the operator authorized.

35. At approximately 1600 hours that same day, the operator returned to the facility to

retrieve the vehicle, paid $1,135 for thc repairs, and received a copy of an invoice.

36. On or about April 14, 2014, the Bureau inspected the vehicle and found that the

facility had performed approximately $777 in unnecessary repairs.

I took my mother's 2004 Mercury Mountaineer ..Towed it to Break Masters. And a guy by the name Don..Had me sign a work order for it ..And he was going to check the rear end of it.So he called my mom and said there was nothing wrong with the rear end ..It was the transmission And it was going to be $2,800.00 to fix it ..Mean while He said that there were new owners of the poperty..And they were towing cars that had been left on the property more than 30 days .well he new my mom just lost my dad and we really could not afford $2,800.00 ..So instead of calling her and telling her what he checked and how much it was ..and come pick it up ...I went to take the insurance card to leave it in the truck ..

I ask where the truck was And he said at first that maybe the owners pick it up ..And there was a title loan on it in Tennessee. .And that was not true ..because it was paid off and insured and registered. And I said well your the one that the keys to it ..So meanwhile before they towed it ..He had my mom sign a blank paper..So I was driving down the road one day and I spotted the truck out front of break master .So I pull in and a so him why my mom truck was sitting there .And he said the new owner was picking it up..And had a towing company pick it up and that's how he got the title to it ..He never ran it in the news paper .Or sent out certified letters. to do a mechanic lean on it ..we don't where the plates are or anything ..Thank You

I called to schedule an oil change and asked them if they honored competitior coupons. Larry informed me he did. After the oil change, I presented a $17.95 coupon from Sun Devil Auto at which time Larry told me I should have told him earlier so he could honor it. When I reminded him I did, he said I needed to have shown it to him physically first. He said I could use it next time and charged me $29.95. He must think I was born yesterday if he thinks I would give him another oportunity to service my car. It is extremely poor customer service to tell me one thing, do another, and then to tell me he will honor his word next time. Do you remember a time in which you were blatantly lied to, and the liar expected you to actually trust him/her again? Fool me once, you're the fool. Fool me twice, and better watch out because social media does the advertisiing (good and bad) a lot more effectively then just one lone voice!

I had an older Honda Accord that wasn't stopping properly. I went to this place because it wasn't far from home and had them inspect my brakes which alone cost me over 100.00 and they did the inspection. The quote that I was given after being terrorized regarding how dangerous it was for me to even allow my vehicle on the road was almost 1700.00. It was more than I could afford so I knew I'd have to get another opinion, but on the way home I noticed my brake light come on and so I checked my owner's manual, which told me to check the brake fluid level.

Well, it needed fluid, which I immediately filled and suddenly my brakes worked. This particular Brake Master's is no longer in business, but with such fraud going on it doesn't take any stretch of the imagination to figure out why. I am so irritated with mechanics that take or try to take advantage of women. All females should do everything that they can to make sure that the vehicle they are driving actually needs any repairs a mechanic suggests. I accidently found a totally honest mechanic as well as a really wonderfully kind business owner due to having a flat in front of the local Mercedes Repair shop (also on Speedway in 5200 E. block...appx).

The owner noticed me as I slowly coasted into the lot in front of his business in an attempt to get my car off the road and ran out to help me. His team changed my tire and got me back on the road, but first told me about a shop I could trust, and when I went there to have my brakes checked 'just in case' - I was informed that the only reason my brake fluid needed to be refilled so often was due to my master cylinder needing a rebuild. My total cost was below 200.00 and that included a tune-up and oil change. The shop was J & J Automotive. So I guess this is one complaint and two 'kudoos' for the fact that there are good people out there.
