My wife and I paid monthly for memberships at a location in clackamas oregon on a month-to-month plan without any cancellation fee. We called in to cancel because we are moving out of town and we were told we had to come in to sign paperwork. We put it off for a week and headed in once we were ready to deal with whatever they were going to do to us.
We came in and requested to cancel, at this point we were told that we are required to give 30 days notice. Since we had just payed a few days prior for the current month, that meant that in 25 days we would need to pay for an additional month of services that we are not capable of using. So we had already payed for 25 days of service that we will not use, but they are asking us to pay for an additional 30 days so that we can accommodate their archaic policy.
Again, we were assured that we had NO cancellation fee. They explained to me that this was not a fee, this was just policy. This did not sound agreeable to me, so I spoke with a manager, he reiterated that it was not a cancellation fee and produced the cancellation agreement contract. This contract stated that we must pay them for the additional month I did not want to sign this contract, I just wanted to cancel. I asked how I could cancel without agreeing to pay for a month of services, and I was told that there was no way.
In order to cancel, I was FORCED to sign a contract saying that I would pay this company for an additional month of services that we cannot possibly use. So I came in on May 5th to cancel, my account won't be actually cancelled until June 30th. That means I have to pay for service for June in order to cancel this account. The only reason a business would require 30 days notice to cancel is so that they can get that extra months money out of you. This is shady, immoral, and absolutely wrong.
