All true animal lovers will understand why I waited almost a YEAR to write this complaint
about Blue Pearl Vet Service, in Franklin, Tn. I was too upset to even approach it.
One year ago, right around Xmas we lost our only SEVEN year old beloved cat.
Clearly, Barley had a healing issue that only came to light after our local Greenhills vet
had to pull a bad tooth. He got infected almost right away, and had to spend about 2 weeks at the animal hospital, because they thought he needed yet another tooth pulled, that was gouging a hole in the gum line beneath it.
At this point, Barley was losing weight rapidly. The infection would not heal. He stayed a total of
3 weeks at our vet hospital—- and we asked them to do another Feline FIV test, to be sure
that while he was outside he did not get exposed.
Barley had numerous fights with other cats. He was an indoor/outdoor cat, because you would not get 5 minutes of rest if he did not go out,and he would whine for HOURS on end, day and night!
Almost a month later, at the end of Dec. our vet told us to take him to the specialists at Blue Pearl Veterinary.
Our nightmare was truly only beginning! Initially they asked for $1,000 UP FRONT. As upset as we were about our beloved animal, of course they played on our emotions and asked for it…. and we gave it.
A Dr. Marc Bercovitch was in charge at that point. From moment ONE, he was sarcastic, condescending, and pompous. He made us think that any questions we might have for him, was absurd. He had a terrible, uncaring attitude. He asked for tests that had already been performed just 2 weeks prior, at our regular vets. We asked him to do the FIV test AGAIN, and nothing came up.
Barley got worse and worse and developed other infections. I went on line and saw there was ONE other test that might tell of FIV, but vets rarely used it. It was only AFTER he died that I found it. NO ONE ever suggested this test.
We went in every day to visit our boy. He would not eat.
Dr. Bercovitch said he was very SURE that if we would just give him one more WEEK, he could get Barley well.
Next day he calls to tell us we need to come in and get him. He had to put a feeding tube UP HIS NOSE— we had never given our approval on that— and he said Barley was still not getting better.
We did not want the animal to suffer anymore and said we were coming in to put him down and requested he “REMOVE EVERY TUBE AND CATHETER” in the poor animal and we would serenely say good-bye. They brought him in, and he STILL had a catheter. We asked why? I have put other animals down without a catheter, but Dr.Bercovich assured us this was very CUSTOMARY.
We came in and they brought us our poor, sick, and suffering animal.
They gave him a shot in the catheter supposedly to calm him so we could say goodbye and then leave and let them put him to sleep. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PEACEFUL DEATH. Now get THIS: He was given a shot, and instead of him peacefully nodding off, he STRUGGLED and whined in my husbands arms, until they removed himWITH HIS TONGUE HANGING OUT OF HIS MOUTH! We feel he was probably dead then—-although they were supposed to give him the shot that put him down AFTER that one. We asked Dr. Bercovich WHY our cat had to suffer in his last moments and he said, very cavalierly, “ Oh… I guess the POLYPROFEL was REFRIGERATED!” OMG IS ALL I CAN SAY!
The memory of how our beloved animal left us, is seared into our brains forever. My husband and I both have had to have therapy to deal with it, and are STILL struggling!
Our attorneys requested that they compensate us for therapy, and for pain and suffering, but Blue Pearl refused! They did not give us our $1,000 back EITHER.
Do yourselves a favor: DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE ANY BUSINESS! And for SURE do not use Dr. Bercovich. He should have had his license removed.
No other animal lover should have to go through what we endured.
