BLU Roofing & Construction Reviews

  • May 25, 2017

I hired Blu Roofing in July 2016 after a bad hail storm to complete numerous aspects of repair to our home. I FOOLISHLY paid in full to the company believing this would allow work to be completed asap. I have regretted my decision every single day. It is now May 2017 and very little has been completed.

The roof has been repaired numerous times due to flapping shingles. There has been scaffolding on my house to repair siding for 20 days now with no work occurring or being completed. I have asked numerous times for the scaffolding to be removed because it bangs against the house all hours and is not safe as I have a pet and child.

I have been in constant contact with Blu to ensure progress since paying in Dec. 2016 and have been misguided and lied to every step of the way. I have had to constantly reach out to the company to get updates and never once have received an update without prompting.

I have caught him in numerous lies by verifying order dates and expectation of delivery from siding and window companies myself. I was informed that the windows Blu told me were coming months ago were only ordered on April 21,2017. The siding that has taken months and months to repair and has supposedly been impossible to find yet has a two week order to ship time frame and was one phone call for me to find.

The deck caps that are supposedly no longer in production are just in fact still in production and currently being used by the builder who built our home. The caps that I was told were in his possession in March were just received May 19,2017 and they are not the right color.

To put the cherry on the top, I just received a stop work order from the city due to the companies lack to pull necessary permits to repair my house.

I have every text message and email saved proving the misleading and false information. Whenever Blu is questioned on the progress, or lack there of, the blame is shifted to the supplying companies. The company lost the window order, the siding isn't available and I have to special order it all, the siding company messed up and sent the wrong siding, the roof is flapping because of the wind (mind you none of my neighbors new roofs flapped because of the same wind) which he then blamed on the positioning of my square home on my square lot next my neighbors square home on his square lot.

It was then the insurance company didn't send enough money, I contacted the adjuster that came to our home and never once was there contact with my insurance company to retain more money to complete the project as well as the software they use is updated daily to ensure contractors have enough and this type of situation never arises.

The last interaction was when the owner of Blu came to our home to try to assure that the work is being completed and scheduled and once again the delays were not his fault but those of the suppliers and in the same breath let us know he was going out of town for a week maybe a week and a half.

Absolutely and utterly disgusted with the lack of professionalism and morals that this companies chooses not to possess. I thought I did enough research and Home Advisor was steering me in the right direction for a contractor, boy was I wrong. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!! BEWARE WHEN HIRING THIS CONTRACTOR!!!

JR Gonzales, the owner of Blu Roofing, was contracted to replace the roof at a rental property in April 2015. During the roof replacement an attached patio cover collapsed. The patio cover then became part of the insurance claim. We paid him the deposit for the patio cover on 09/15/2016.

Over the next SEVEN months he had sporadic contact with us. He stated that he was working with an engineer to create plans for the patio cover that the City of Aurora would approve.

In April and May the patio cover structure was built and the main circuit breaker was replaced. The work completed did not include the roof of the patio cover or any other work that was detailed in our itemized insurance estimate, including lattice work, paint, as well as wiring and high grade lighting for underneath the patio cover.

Soon after the structure was complete JR demanded payment of $12000. He threatened to put a lien on the house if we did not pay. We had already paid him $8000 at that point and the patio cover was still incomplete and uninspected. I told him that I would pay in full once it was completed and inspected. He emailed me an engineering report from Shear Engineering which stated that the the structure was up to code. I totaled the value of the completed work and paid him that amount the next day.

On 07/02/2016 roofers installed the patio cover roof. For 3 months the wood sat uncovered causing the OSB to swell. These boards were not replaced and the roof was put directly on top of them.

During an inspection of the main roof from the original contract I discovered that a permit had never been pulled for the patio cover. The seven months when JR was apparently working with the city was a lie.

I called Shear Engineering to confirm that they approved his blueprints and structure. They told me they have never worked with him before and have no record of any jobs at my address. The review that he sent me was forged, including falsely using an engineer’s signature and stamp. I refused to pay for the unpermitted and unverified work and he gave me a notice of intent to file lien.

After several weeks with no contact, JR's subcontractor Mason Mikeall submitted plans for the existing patio cover and was granted a permit. The plans that were approved were different than what was actually built, including a different slope of the roof and a different roofing material. The city came to inspect the structure on 7/20 and 7/28 and failed the inspection both times because:

1) There was no record of caisson inspection. An engineer’s letter of compliance was needed in order to verify the piers were correct.

2) The manufacturer’s installation instructions were needed in order to verify the correct substrate and pitch of the roof.

A third inspection was completed on 8/11, during which Mason provided a new engineering report from Shear Engineering as well as installation instructions stating that OSB was an approved substrate. Believing these documents to be valid the inspector approved the structure. Shear Engineering reported that they again had no involvement with this second report and that it was forged as well. Furthermore, the installation instructions provided were for a different type of material than that which was installed.

I visited the City of Aurora Plans Department and informed them of the forgery. In light of the evidence, they scheduled another inspection. This final inspection of the structure failed based on the previously found problems.

Following this inspection failure and 336 days an unfulfilled contract I terminated my contract with Blu Roofing. I had already paid in full for everything completed and verified. However, JR continues to demand payment (and threatens a lien) for the remainder of the contract, which consists of items that he never attempted to complete or had been completed incorrectly and will need repair or replacement.

My experience with Blu Roofing has been full of deceit, delay, and unprofessionalism.
