I went to Anu Batra of B Anu Designs to look for jewelry for an event. After making some selections, trying them on over my thick turtleneck sweater dress, and seeing them in a crowded closet, I asked for the price. Anu said the jewelry is made of silver and is $2400.
She let me look at the jewelry briefly in her dimly lit office and started packing it. In that light, and with the time I had, I didn't see anything wrong, so I thought I would buy it. However, Anu wanted cash, or if not cash then some other form of payment like Zelle or check; anything but NOT credit card. I thought that was odd but I went to my car to look for a checkbook, and had second thoughts. I wanted to think about it and come back the next day if I still wanted it.
I went back in to let her know I needed more time before deciding, but before I could speak, Anu started sobbing and crying and told me "thank goodness" I found my checkbook because she was having some serious personal problems and I felt pressured to buy because of her personal problems. Her sob story made me pity her so I paid with a check and she gave me the box of jewelry. She did not give me a receipt, but I thought nothing of it at the time.
When I got home and saw the jewelry in better light, I could tell it was NOT silver at all. It was used, rusted in places, and had sharp edges and missing stones. The tassels were completely blackened and stunk of body odor, as if many people had worn it multiple times. I also tried the magnet test and the magnet stuck strongly to the jewelry, which implies that it has a ferromagnetic core and is not 'silver’ as she claimed, on top of being clearly defective and heavily used. But I felt so bad about Anu's personal problems that I still sent her a note saying I wore it and it was beautiful.
Later on, after thinking about it, I felt manipulated and scammed. I felt that I had fallen for her stories of personal problems that she laid out on me; a customer she had just met that evening. I started to doubt her intentions and decided to at least try to return the defective jewelry.
Since she had sobbed and cried at her store citing personal problems and needing my business, I thought I had no choice but to approach the topic very carefully as I was concerned that she was emotionally distraught based on all the personal problems she laid out on me. Again, we had only just met for the first time the previous evening.
So as kindly as possible, I asked her if she would take the jewelry back and give me only a partial refund. But she was unwilling to. So I thought maybe I could sell it. I asked for the receipt, since she never gave me one, and she said she would email it the next day.
However, after some research, I then realized I couldn't resell it since no one wants to buy defective, rusted, sharp, fake jewelry. Also, in India completely fake jewelry like this will cost not more than a few hundred USD, but Anu Batra fooled me saying it’s "silver”. I would never have paid $2400 for such defective, heavily used jewelry that is completely fake and not even silver.
At that point, I started feeling something was way off. I shared the story with my friends and family who googled her and looked her up. I was shocked to find out from public records that she was not entirely who she claimed to be.
I felt so manipulated by her sob story and just wanted to return her jewelry, get my check back, and walk away. After much drama she finally agreed to exactly that, which I confirmed with her. She then sent a long string of messages cursing me and harassing me until after 1am. I was trying to sleep but her nonstop messages kept me up. I asked her to stop cursing and harassing me, and reminded her we confirmed a time "I will drop off" her jewelry and get my check back.
The next day, we drove for an hour to return her jewelry back to her, which she happily inspected and took back into her store. Once Anu Batra had the returned items, instead of returning our check back she got a lawyer friend who gave us frivolous legal threats & bullied us trying to get us to sign a ridiculous contract saying not to tell anybody about our bad experience of being scammed by her business and not to write a review of them harassing us or else they won't give us our check back. Remember, they had already taken back their product by that time.
We were shocked and intimidated. In spite of Anu Batra of B Anu Designs committing fraud with us & scamming us we were still kind and tried to understand, keeping in mind the pandemic, small business problems, etc, but the nail in the coffin was when Anu Batra loudly declared that even if we sign the illegal contract they sprung on us, she still wants to sue us just to harass us. Mind you, this was all over a simple return of her fake defective products; a return to which she had already agreed.
Wasn’t it enough that B Anu Designs completely scammed us and upon taking their jewelry back sprung out a surprise lawyer to threaten us? Anu Batra and her lawyer tried to force us to sign an illegal agreement under duress; keeping our check hostage and threatening legal action against us unless we sign immediately. They still have our check to this date.
On top of that, Anu Batra has admitted, verbally and in writing, that she has recordings of me and my family, including both audio and video from inside her store. There was no signage about surveillance, nor did she ask for our consent. So be warned if you visit her store. She illegally recorded us without our consent. Ironically, such recordings would only confirm our horrible experience and implicate her.
Also, it turns out the ridiculous contract Anu Batra of B Anu Designs and her lawyer were attempting to get us to sign is apparently illegal in the State of CA, according to the Yelp Bill.
Still, we were sufficiently intimidated at the time that we even considered signing, if they crossed out the lies and overly broad restrictions it would have (illegally) placed on us. But ultimately we couldn’t bring ourselves to sign. It just felt so wrong.
Because of B Anu Designs' Anu Batra harassing, threatening & bullying us with a lawyer we had no choice but to pay $2500 of our own money to get legal counsel to find out what our rights are to protect ourselves from Anu Batra’s harassment. At the end, we have not only been scammed by fake defective jewelry by Anu Batra owner of B Anu Designs, but are also out of $2500 due to her and her lawyer's harassment, bullying and frivolous legal threats. And they still have our check.
If Anu Batra of B Anu Designs had simply returned our check after taking back her defective products, as she agreed, we would not have posted any review, and this would all have been a memory. Instead, after putting us through all the above, we feel obligated to warn others. Do business with B Anu Designs at your own risk.
