I don't think this builder ( if they really are builders , more like white color crooks ) scammed us out of 9K dollars .
We gave them a 9K deposit trusting them since they did a job for our neighbor , we wanted out deck enclosed My husband check them out at the BBB and saw they had high ratings however we did not know there where two B&R Builders . One in Dumfries VA and one in Ashburn VA , the one now closed in Dumfries was legit but I think they used their name so they can be trusted in their scam .
They say they had had filed for bankruptcy but they did not , they just left town and now wanted by police . Apparently they have done this to more than 20 trusting homeowners . From what my husband told me , they wanted to apply for another Builder permit under a different name . The nerve of these people is stunning !!
For any homeowner out there , go to Washingtonian Checkbook.org if you need trustworthy Builders or really anything .
This is my 2nd job with Dustin, this one is a polar opposite of the deck job he did for us. Current project was delayed by 2+ months to start, and took 4+ months to complete after that (verbally promised in under 5 weeks, contract stated estimated 5-7 weeks). A less than 2-month job took 6+ months, I would text and call Dustin almost daily trying to get the job moving!!! Each time I was met with new excuses. A lot of the time when I got a new deadline or a new estimate from B&R, it was flat out wrong. "Person X will be there on day Y", nope doesn't even show up. It was pretty obvious Dustin was lying the whole time, as he would say one thing then tell me "I never said that", and I would have text message documented proof. Subcontractors would go to other jobs, and would come to my house only about once a week.
******Read his contract carefully, it offers NO customer protection. So when B&R/Dustin makes a mistake, the customer has minimal legal recourse. I found out way too late******
Constant mistakes throughout, no coordination between the project manager and the crew. Work was done, and then re-done many times over. Sometimes I caught the mistakes on time (to avoid another delay to redo the work), sometimes I didn't. But it's not my job to catch the mistakes, it's theirs.
*****His subcontractors verbally told me that the reason the job was dragging so long is because he doesn't pay them on time (or has not paid them for previous jobs). If it's true, I don't blame them, but if he doesn't pay them or pays them late, then what did he do with my money??? Dustin also constantly asked for the "next" payment before a "phase" of work was complete. Both of these should have been huge red flags*****
The job only started moving when I threatened B&R with a VA DPOR complaint followed by a breach of contract followed by a lawsuit. I should have done this earlier.
