I had the misfortune of having to get an interlock, this company had a location in Mesa near where I lived. At the time I was driving a 67 Rambler American. I drove my car to their Phoenix location for the initial install. I get there and as I'm having installed they have me fill out the paperwork. I opt-IN for the insurance and am told I can't have insurance because my car doesn't have electric locks (???). Fill out paperwork again and go about my day. Several months later I buy a Land Rover and go to them to have the device installed in my new vehicle, which I was charged a pretty sum for. Once the device was in my new car I asked to add the insurance. They said "we can't add insurance because the contracts are tied to an individual, not a vehicle (???). So, they denied me insurance twice for 2 different reasons. Fast forward a couple months and I am in CA visiting family and my Land Rover has the window smashed and the device is stolen (literally ripped out of the dash with brute force despite the basic printer cable screws that would easily detach it). I get back to AZ and have to get a new device installed. Several weeks later AMAT contacts me and says that someone called in to report having found the device. I immediately asked if they were able to get it back and they say "no, we took down their info for you to contact them" (???). Complete negligence on their part because they had someone willing to call and return it and they did nothing to have the device returned other than giving me a phone number and first name. I call this person and they state that they had already sent it. I call AMAT and they say they don't have it. I call stranger in CA again and get no answer from there on out despite leaving voicemails offering as much as $300 to have it sent to me.
So, how could this get any worse... let me tell you. As I approached my end date for the court ordered device AMAT starts harrassing me about paying for the "lost" device (I suspect they got the device and were taking advantage of me). I tell them that I'm not in a position to repay them, as I was going through a bankruptcy. This is where they showed their true colors as a complete scam. They tell me that they WILL NOT remove the device from my car until i pay for the "lost" device. I am clear that they don't have the authority to do this after I call ADOT and I tell AMAT I've contacted ADOT directly concerning the matter. AMATs rebuttal was "if you have the device removed we will report you to DMV for tampering, which extends your interlock mandate another year". I paid an additional 2 months beyond my court ordered date in fear of going back to jail or having to keep the device. Finally, I went to a mechanic and had it uninstalled and I dropped it off without saying a word and left.
AMAT put me in collections! I understand they have every right to be indemnified for their loss, but I wasn't given the opportunity to purchase insurance that would have indemnified me against my loss. The basis for the denial of insurance is concerning because at one point its my door locks and the next its because of the individual, me. If an individual is discretionarily denied insurance that is discrimanatory. Secondly, if you are the rightful owner of the device and place your contact info on it in the event of lost or stolen... why would you not try to collect your device when contacted??? Why would you make the victim of theft have to secure the device some time after the initial contact??? Lastly, they threatened to put me back at square one with the courts over a payment dispute. Thats all kinds of wrong. I do NOT feel I owe them a thing seeing as I did as I was instructed at every turn. Furthermore, I highly suspect they received the device that was stolen and saw an opportunity to make an extra $2500 off of me. I have no way of proving if they received the device other than taking their word, and quite frankly, their word is not worth the spit on their tongues.
Simply stated, these crooks have been given an authority that should not be bestowed upon them. Whats more is that they abuse their power and use it to blackmail their paying customers with further legal ramifications.
