She had commented on Instagram that she had a particular sweater for sale. Her instagram page was public and full of photos of her kids so she seemed harmless. I messaged her to ask for photos and she sent me a photo (that I later learned she had stolen from someone else to make it look like it was hers).
She said she would sell it for 380.00 because she "didn't sell clothing a lot and wasn't looking to make a profit" and she mainly wanted to sell it to buy stuff for her daughter. I asked for a Paypal invoice and she said she didn't have PayPal (which was a lie). She asked for me to Venmo it to her at @Anya-Li0605.
I proceeded to try to pay her through Venmo but it wasn't allowing me to. She then suggested Zelle because it was "safe and protected by the banks". I had never sent money with Zelle before, only recieved money from family members and I naively assumed it was buyer protected. I sent the money through Zelle and she said she would ship it first thing in the morning before work.
The next morning came and I recieved no update and I noticed her previously public instagram was now private. I waited until that evening and asked for the tracking info. She read my message but didn't respond. An hour later I said I was getting concerned and wanted an update and minutes later, she blocked me.
I immediately put out a public post on instagram and facebook to ask others if they knew anything about this person. I learned fairly quickly that Anya Ghidella AKA Anya Li had scammed MANY people before me on instagram, poshmark, and facebook. She pretends to have something for sale then blocks or dissapears once the person pays. I never heard from Anya again and any attempt to message her from another account resulted in her immediatley blocking me.
Luckily for me, I was able to get my money back from the scammer but I wanted to warn others because she has the same public instagram for years (that occasionally goes private when she scams someone so they cant comment on her posts) which tells me shes never really gone into hiding and keeps getting away with this.
