Anderson Insurance Agency Reviews

  • Jun 14, 2022

We closed on the purchase of our home on August 8, 2020. The prior owner had Flood Insurance on the home through the Anderson Agency, Milford, CT and they transferred that policy to us. I called the Anderson Agency and spoke with Katherine, gave her our details and we received a flood policy declarations number 87029023562019 shortly thereafter. The policy period was 10/30/2019 to 10/30/2020 and the premium was $573.00 which we paid the pro-rated amount from 8/8/20 through 10/30/20.

I did not get any correspondence or call from the Anderson Agency to let me know that the policy was expiring in October of 2020 nor do I remember having received any notifications from the National Flood Insurance Program or Mapfre, the company that wrote the policy.

In March of 2022, I was searching for the Flood Policy and I called Katherine at the Anderson Agency. She told me that we had no flood policy with them as it has expired. I was shocked that they had not contacted us either by phone or email, knowing that the price of the policy could increase drastically if we had to get a new policy! I asked her to provide me with a quote as soon as possible as I was very nervous about being without Flood insurance. She sent me a quote with Progressive on September 18, 2021. I immediately called her back as the quote was $646 and not much higher than original policy. I asked her to put the policy in place and gave her my credit card number over the phone. I had not seen a policy or declarations page so I emailed Katherine on March 10, 2022 and asked if I could have a copy of my policy. She called me back and told me that we had no policy as my credit card "probably did not go through and therefore the policy was not written”. I emailed her and also told her over the phone that I couldn’t believe anyone could be so careless and not notify me that the card didn’t work! The credit card I used was our Bank of America credit card. That account had much more money than the $646 premium so there was no reason it would not work.

I did not hear back from Katherine after my email from March 30. On March 3I Don Anderson, the agency principal, called and promised that he would get a quote that wouldn’t be much higher but I have yet to hear from him. I called the office on the following dates and there was always some excuse that he was not available:

April 25

April 27

May 2

May 3

Since I had not heard from Mr. Anderson with a new quote, I proceeded to call Progressive directly and got a quote from them of $5,475 for the same coverage that was quoted to us by Anderson Insurance.

The reason the insurance cost got so high was due to a reassessment of the flood zones. Due to the lapse in coverage, we are now considered a new policyholder (in the new flood zone) since our policy expired and the requested policy was not put in place.

I applied online for flood quotes and all of them were in the $3,500 or more range. I finally got a quote from Glover Agency in Norwalk for $3,017 and that is without contents coverage! I bound coverage and now have the new policy.

I called FEMA and was told that if we still had coverage prior to the flood map reassessment our policy could only increase by 18 percent yearly but that it was now too late for that.

As a result of the Anderson Agency’s error, we are faced with paying an extra $2,371.02 this year, without contents coverage. We will be paying this extra amount or perhaps more for at least the next 10 years which adds up to $23,710.02!! The agency owner refuses to talk to me! In my opinion this is a huge error on their part and they should have to reimburse us the difference every year or give us a lump sum payment.
