My family and another family went on vacation in the Dominican Republic. Our flight times were strange so Economy was our only option for renting a car. Economy advertised as a 24 hour rental company. We reserved our vehicles including information on the time of arrival and departure. When we arrived on July 21st at 2:30 am and no one was at the rental desk. We waited and attempted to call the company without any answer.
We then had to pay $50 for a cab ride to our rental residence. The next day they did not answer their phone until after 10:00 am. My friend was forced to call the headquarters of Economy rental service in order to get someone in contact with the rental service in Puerto Plata Airport. Our first day of vacation was spent calling Economy (also DBA AmeriRent) for literally HOURS on hold and trying to resolve the issue. We were hung up on, transferred and overall disregarded and lied to for HOURS. The employees (Abigail and Jaro) and a manager repeatedly told us that someone was coming to pick us up to get the vehicles.
By 7 pm no one had come to our rental residence and no one had returned our calls. WE had to call every time we needed to communicate that there was no one coming to get us. We had no food and no means of getting food. We had 5 children with us who were hungry and we were unable to get them food. We were literally stranded. We then drove to the location and again it was closed and locked; however, a guard at the airport opened the doors and Jaro was behind the desk. Not only did the employees not offer any compensation for a lost day of vacation and the complete inconvenience; they were indifferent to the situation. By the time the whole ordeal was complete we did not get home until after 9 pm . WE had to take our exhausted, starving children out to eat at 9 pm. Two children were so exhausted they fell asleep at the table and were not able to eat their meals.
If that were not bad enough when we went to return the vehicles, the employees at the location cleared the vehicles and while my husband was paying an employee who would not identify himself came back 20 minutes into the drop off saying the "tire was flat." My husband was then told we would have to pay for it with our insurance. My husband looked at the tire and there were no flats. They proceeded to pull out a 10 year old, bald spare tire from the trunk and claimed that it was flat (which although bald and old was NOT flat). Additionally, we did not use the spare tire. Jaro attempted to get my husband to sign something agreeing to authorize payment on our Amex insurance for the tire which he refused. In addition, the "mechanic" whose name is unknown (who claimed the tire was flat) came in and spoke in Spanish (not realizing my husband knows Spanish) and told Jaro to charge him for the tire and called him crazy. It seems your company was attempting to defraud American Express insurance.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH HORRENDOUS CUSTOMER SERVICE AND LACK OF REGARD FOR THE CUSTOMER. Actually I would consider the employees to be going out of their way to treat us poorly. I plan to write this up on every website I can find to make sure to steer as much business from this company as possible. It sullied an amazing vacation and this company should be shut down.
