AmeriGas Propane, Inc. Reviews

My Dad had an account with Amerigas propane for an outside tank. When he died, I became owner of the home where the tank was. I told Amerigas this but they left the account in his name and never did a new contract for me.

2 years ago, the tank started leaking. You could smell propane anywhere within 15 feet of the tank. Amerigas said they would inspect it. No one ever came or contacted me. Last year, I did not fill the tank since it was unsafe to do so with it leaking. They sent me a bill for not filling it up. I did not feel like messing with it so I just paid it.

This year, they sent me another bill for not filling it. I contacted them and told them again it was leaking. They said they would only replace it if I was there, I explained it is an outdoor tank and there is nothing in the home leaking. No gas can be smelled inside. Just outside around the tank. I advised I could not take a day off from work for that and asked that they please replace the leaking tank for a working one. They refused. Their rep said she would waive the refill fee though and that she could have the leaking tank removed. I said I was not going to fill up a leaking tank. If they wanted to remove it, that was their choice. She did waive the fee.

They came a couple days later and removed the tank. I nor anyone else was there. Apparently they have no problem unscrewing a hose and removing a tank all on their own, but they cannot place a new tank down and screw the hose in unless someone is there watching them and applauding I guess.

A month later, I receive a new bill for removal of the tank. I contacted them multiple times since and they will not assist me. They just send new bills with late fees. I refuse to pay them. They chose to remove the tank. They are still sending invoices to my dad who has been deceased now for 15 years. This is unfair business practices. My choices were to either fill a leaky tank and risk blowing up my house, pay a fine for not filling up the tank or pay a fee for removing a tank? Their rep never disclosed there was a fee for the removal.

Amerigas has ridiculous pricing, held an account open for someone who was deceased for 15 years, failed to disclose a fee structure to the actual account holder, failed to obtain a contract from the new homeowner, failed to respond to multiple complaints, and have caused emotional distress over the matter. As the account is not even listed in a living person's name, they should zero out the acount, close it, and leave me alone.

In December 2021 I received a bill from Amerigas for the tank rental fee for the upcoming year, 2022. I was unhappy with Amerigas and decided to call them and have the tank removed. I contacted Amerigas the next day and instructed them to remove their empty tank. In January I get a bill from them that also assessed a late fee.

I called Amerigas again and spend an hour disputing the bill and the late fee. They waive the bill and the fee, and I asked them again to come get their tank. In February the process repeats, with one change. I notify them that I am moving, and their tank will be unsupervised on the property. They again waive the bill and the late fee, and again I tell them to get their tank.

In March and April I go through the same process with bills and fees waived both times, and Amerigas CSR's telling me their records show that I asked for removal in December, and that I should not be billed or have late fees assessed for the tank.

Yesterday, May 19th, 2022 We repeat the process one more time. Today, May 20th 2022, I receive a call from the collection agency they have turned me over to for the bill and late fee they waived yesterday.

Since Jan of 2017, we were a customer of Amerigas in Fayetteville, NC. On or about August, 2021, I knew I was moving out of state and contacted Amerigas to determmine what would occur when I cancelled my service with them.

The service representative at the Fayetteville office told me they would lock my tank and refund me for the dollar amount of the remaining propane. As it happened, the new owner decided to obtain service from Amerigas. Apparently, Amerigas either did not follow through with locking the tank or they unlocked it, allowing the new owner to use it.

When I called Amerigas, their system had been turned over to what seemed like a hotbox, so we never could reach the Fayetteville office. Since moving out of state, I have contacted Amerigas on nine separate occasions to no avail in obtaining my refund.

I have been hung up on, told several different stories and have been put on hold for a period of about 40 minutes with the representative never returning to the phone. At one point I was told I would get the refund within 4 weeks but it never occurred.

So as of this date, I am due a refund of $147.79 and they have added insult to injury by sending me a bill that the new owner owes for $69.99 (we didn't even live there in the state).

This is a very poor company, from the top to the bottom. The customer service agents for AMERI gas are ALL overseas. You can't understand them and they can't understand you. I needed a form for Medicare and not ONE single foreigner I spoke to knew what form I needed. They were clueless. After 4 hours of CONSTANTLY calling AMERI gas Benefits Dept, I finally got a manager named TOYA MELTON, an American. She was BY FAR the rudest person God ever put on earth. Evil, actually.

The next day my husband, the 40 year employee, gets an email from a Lynne Haney, Benefits Manager, admonishing my husband to not 'allow' his spouse to call the Benefits Center EVER AGAIN! Never ONCE did she offer to speak to us regarding OUR experience with the so-called manager. I know this is all a non-issue for all of you reading this but I DO think it indicates the type of company AMERI gas is. You will NOT get an American to speak to.

As an American, I have a RIGHT to ask to be transferred to the states and the majority of the foreigners laugh at you when you ask to be transferred. According to the the Federal Fair Trade Commision, I absolutely have the right to request an agent from America. But AMERI gas does not adhere to these standards; something of which I am checking into as we speak. There's nothing more boring I know, than listening to someone's failed customer service experiences.

My goal here is strictly to advise people of the management of this company from the HR Dept to the Benefits Dept and everywhere in between. To admonish my husband NOT to have me phone there ever again, is discriminatory against me and they provided no resolution whatsoever OR any investigation into THEIR employees. I taped a good majority of TOYA and several others and only wish I could share it with you.

ANY company that would allow their employees to treat customers (in my case the spouse of a LONG-time employee) in such a manner is no company I would want to be a customer of OR an employee of.

I have yet to experience a rip-off this bad. It caused me to register here and write my story. There are countless other customsers being ripped off at this moment across Ventura County and around the city of Ojai. I don't know how much further it goes past that.

I have a 10 acre ranch that is very expensive to upkeep. We trust service providers to do thier job and bill fairly for their service or product. After years of signing large checks to Amerigas as they routinely filled our two 500 gallon propane tanks, I decided to research the bill with a closer eye.

In a nutshell, propane costs X amount just like gasoline. There are price discrepancies amongst service providers but not that large. Just like when you go to a gas station. I realized that many thousands of gallons of propane refills were being billed at $4.85 a gallon without my approval regarding any price increases. I simply figured the ranch was consuming more gas since it's so large.

Propane costs approximately $2.40 a gallon as I write this on the open market. I immediately fired Amerigas and had their rental tanks cut. They even had the audacity of charging a fee to pick up their tanks. Amerigas attempted to keep the account by bringing the cost down to market, but their gig was up. They were ripping me off to a tune of $25,000 a year. You read that right. Approximately twenty five thousand dollars each year.

If you read their yelp, you will see they do this to many if not all their customers. People simply don't know what propane costs with a competitor, so many pay and don't question.

To add insult to injury, I also now have my tanks filled to 90% capacity. Amerigas apparently filled the tanks to 60% during a fill. This created a cycle of more frequent fills and they bill for every time they come and fill you up. Another way to rip off customers.

I hope this report makes it to enough people and customers EN MASSE leave Amerigas high and dry. Their pricing practices are unethical and may be borderline illegal. We switched to AAA propane and have had zero complaints and nothing but fair pricing and great service.
