I hired Ryan Harrigan (All Around Carpentry) after he told me that he was a licensed contractor (he did not have a license and does not as of the date of this complaint) and that he had completed the trim work on a new LDS Temple in a neighboring town. He was sweet and charming and even invited me to go for a walk the day after I hired him to paint, build cabinets, replace flooring and install crown molding on my very small home.
The first day was not terribly productive but I wasn't worried--I knew the first day would be spent moving furniture, etc. Beginning on the second day, I began to worry because not much was done. By the third day, I knew there was a lot to worry about. Ryan began arguing with me and had an excuse for everything.
He could not stay focused more than a few seconds. If I asked him a question, he would snap at me and tell me that I did not read the contract. (I found out later that he was constantly altering the electronic contract (joist.com)). At first he told me he would buy everything but the paint, so I bought $400 of paint. Then he told me he would pay for everything but the flooring and that he would reimburse me for the paint (which he did not).
After four days of being in my small home (about 1,000 sf) only 2/3 of the ceilings were painted--that is all. No paint on the walls, no paint on the baseboards--four days and all that was done was some of the ceiling. The following day he informed me that he had given the painter the day off. He promised me that he would finish the painting the next day and demanded the second installment of money--I reluctantly (and turns out, foolishly) paid him.
He immediately left my house and I did not see him until late that evening. He would paint part of a baseboard then go into another room and paint part of another baseboard. I understand overspray, but he literally painted the bottom of the black iron railing along the stairway. When I pointed it out, he assured me he would just spray paint the railing black. He left several times and after coming back to my house, and he kept telling me the painting would be finished the next day.
He told me that he would start at 8:00 a.m. the next morning and work all day. At 10:00 the next morning I tried to contact him to see where he was. He finally answered the phone and reminded me that it was Sunday and that he was "allowed" to sleep in one day a week. He said that he would be over later. He never showed.
The following day my friend offered to meet with Ryan and me to iron out details. Ryan was belligerant, he couldn't sit still and he would not let neither my friend nor I complete a single sentence. At one point he told my friend that they could go outside and settle things "man to man." Eventually, the police were called to escort him off my property. Once the police showed up Ryan's demeanor changed rapidly back to that charming person I first met and decided to hire.
Ryan was allowed to remove his tools from my garage and lied to my friend and law enforcement that he had paid for the paint--so he stole that too. I will pursue this matter through the legal system. I am devastated and embarrassed that I used my savings to pay Ryan for work he promised but did not do. I have never encountered such a mean and deceitful person.
The way Ryan smoothly orchestrated this scam indicates that he has had a lot of practice lying, cheating and deceiving people. He has excuses for everything. He argues about everything. His behavior at times is scary--so erratic and unpredictable. Please do not make the terrible mistake I made by hiring this man.
