AGL Auto Exports LLC Reviews

  • Jan 28, 2016

I saw this 2002 Nissan Frontier in the Want AD Digest. It had only 64000 miles on it and the Ad said it was a good reliable truck with low miles! Wont Last!. The price was $9995.00. I called AGL auto and spoke to Ken Brown. He said the truck was immaculate and was well cared for because it belonged to his mechanic.

I scheduled an appointment to see the truck and a few days later my fiance' and myself drove 3 hrs to Latham, NY to look at the truck. We met Ken and began checking out the vehicle, but instead of discussing the vehicle, Ken talked endlessly about his life. His divorce, his kids, his wife's propensity for cheating on him. When I looked under the truck, I noticed that the spare tire was missing. Ken assured me if I decided to purchase the truck, he would get a new spare for it.

We took the truck for a test drive and found that it pulled to the right with a shimmy in the wheel and the air conditioner was blowing hot air. Upon returning to the dealership, we informed Ken of the truck's issues. He stated that he believed the wheels needed to be balanced and the AC needed a charge. He assured me he would have all of these deficiancies fixed by the time I picked up the truck. Also, Ken would not budge on the price saying that I was getting the deal of a lifetime for a truck with such low miles.!

We then left the dealership and over the next week I secured financing. About one week later, I called Ken and he said "The truck is ready to go Lance whenever you want to come pick it up". I arranged to take off from work and me, my Dad, and my sister drove 3 hrs back to Cohoes to pick up the truck.

When we arrived, the truck was sitting outside and had appeared to have been detailed. Ken quickly rushed us into his office to fill out the paperwork. Upon completing the forms and handing over the check, I asked Ken where he found the spare tire from and he sighed heavily, rubbed his head, and said " I'm so sorry. It completeley skipped my mind". " go to a junkyard in your hometown and call me so I can pay for it" I reluctantly agreed to this and asked him. "What if a get a flat tire on the way home?" Ken replied " You won't get a flat, Come on."

At this point, I was getting a really bad feeling. We went out to the truck and I climbed inside, started it, and found that the AC was still blowing hot air. Ken once again got all apologetic and claimed that his mechanic told him that he had fixed it. He then said, and I quote, " It will probably get cold as you drive down the road"! Really? So he says. "If it does'nt get cold, take it to your repair shop and have your mechanic charge the system".

By know, I knew I had been taken! I then pulled out of his lot to find that the truck was still pulling hard to the right and the shimmy was still present!. Ken did nothing he had promised he was going to do! I immediatley called him and got the same song and dance about his shotty mechanic and to have my mechanic fix the problem and to call him from the repair shop the next day. 5 minutes after hanging up with Ken, the check engine light comes on!!!!!!

I once again called Ken and told him that the check engine light had come on. He once again told me to take it to my mechanic and have him plug in the computer. He said the codes just needed to be cleared. Half way home it starts to rain heavily. It was then that I found out the wipers did'nt work!. I am now driving a truck in the pouring rain without wipers, is pulling to the right and shimmying, with no spare tire!!

We made it safely home and i worked the following day until 4pm. I then took the truck to Maplewood Auto, a reputable repair shop in my home town of Monticello. The first thing the mechanic noticed when he popped the hood was that the truck had been in an accident. The hood, radiator, and fender had all been replaced! He then plugged in the computer and to my horror, 4 codes appeared! Transmission being the most concerning code that had appeared. I tried calling Ken at that point but he would not answer! I tried texting him repeatedly with no response. Every time i called Ken prior to this, he answered every time. I texted him to not cash my check and that I wanted a refund. I could not reach Ken for the remainder of the evening!

While at home that night, I entered the vin # into a google search and the truck turned up on a salvage website! Salvagebids.com with photos of the truck with the front end damage to it. The next morning at work, I receive a text from Ken saying "WARNING!!!!" DO NOT PLAY GAMES WITH ME!" Do not stop payment on that check! IT IS A CRIME!! Up to this point I was nothing but cordial to this person who had clearly wronged me and now had an attitude with me!!

I then called Ken and he informed me that I have to comply with the Lemon Law sheet that I signed. This was all new to me. The law states that you must bring the vehicle back to where you bought it and have him repair it but since i lived so far from AGL Auto, Ken authorized me to use my mechanic. So my mechanic had me bring the truck to a transmission shop to have it checked since that was the most serious of the codes. The man there said that it seemed to be shifting ok but the code said Gear #2 out of ratio. One of the other codes was a faulty knock sensor and he thought maybe the transmission code was being generated from that. He reset the computer and on my way home the check engine light came back on!.

I told Ken this and he assumed the transmission was ok, but it was not. He told me that he had changed the knock sensor. My mechanic started the work on the truck starting with the knock sensor. He found that Ken had not changed it. He had to break bolts free to get to it. Ken lied to me! The AC would not hold a charge because the lines were all corroded and the freon just leaks out. That first repair cost me $1268.49. 10 minutes after picking it up, the check engine light came back on!

Upset about the mounting repair bill, I call Ken and he expressed unwillingness to cover any of this bill. He also sent scathing text messages saying "i bought a truck and not a mercedes" He then agreed to pay 400.00 toward the repair but I wanted a refund. His response to that was " I don't give people their money back"! Thinking that this was my only recourse, I reluctantly accepted the money from him, but convinced him through much persuading to cover more of the bill. He finally agreed to give me an extra $100.00. Gee thanks! Since then, the truck has been in the shop two more times. Each time the check engine light reappered!

At this point, i'm up to almost $2500.00 in repairs! and the check engine light is still on. I filed a complaint with the attorney general's office and an arbitration hearing was scheduled for Jan 20th 2015. One week before the arbitration, the head gasket blew on my way home from work! The truck now sits solemnly at my mechanic's garage a total loss. I cannot afford to keep throwing money at it!. More transmission codes have also appeared. Now it is gears 1, 2, and 3 out of synch! The arbitration was held and Ken did not even show up.! He told the arbitrator he would not participate. What kills me is that they could not rule in my favor because the three times it was in the shop, it was not for the same problem! The law it seems is structured to protect unscrupulous dealers and not the consumer. I feel my only recourse now is to take AGL Auto to civil court to recoop my losses. I advise anyone looking for a used car to steer very far and clear from Ken Brown of AGL Auto. He is a very shady person who will tell sob stories about his pathetic life to make you feel bad for him and then after he has your money, could care less about a problem you are having with a vehicle purchased from him!
