Achievers Early College Prep Charter School Reviews
Jan 14, 2020
Two sisters who are not STEAM teachers decided to open a charter school New Jersey has a state law in place for public schools so this will not happen. If a family member works for the state of New Jersey running a school a family member cannot work at the same school.
The other positions in administration were never advertised. These jobs were given to other friends or family members. A charter school is still a public school and receives public tax dollars. It is not a private school because the word 'prep' is in the name or because the students were uniforms.
Teachers that are not certified in a certain content area are asked to teach classes. The director often teaches classes even though she is not a certified teacher. Osen Osagie is not certified to teach within the state of New Jersey.
There are no specialty classes with the exception of gym. The school does not want to pay for an art, music, or drama teacher. The Spanish teacher is not a Spanish teacher but a gym teacher. The students speak an advanced level of Spanish and he speaks basic, and cannot read or write the language. He is not certified to teach Spanish.
There are no experienced teachers within the building. The reason being is that inexperienced teachers can be paid much less and will work longer hours. While the school is approximately 70 percent hispanic, 28% African American and 2% Caucasian, there are few minority teachers and no staff members fluent in Spanish other than the secretary. There is no base pay rate for teachers and staff. Administrators earn above $75,000 per year and there are 6 of them.
While the school cannot hire an appropriate janitorial or cafteria staff, along with office staff they seem to be able approve contracts for a real estate consultant to the tune of $7,000.00. Title 1 money is accepted but there are no classes specifically for Title 1 elgible students.
Special Education students attend the school but there are no Special Education teachers. Do the math, for each Special Education student the school receives $45,000. If there are 20 students that is a lot of money for students who are discipline problems going nowhere.
The school has refused to purchse books. They have instead given every child a Google laptop on which the students are constant watching Youtube, and going on inappropriate site because there are no firewalls in place.
Copies of 30 year old texts books are copied so that their are digital versions the students can access. Current reaing materials for English are photocopied and stapled together. The publishers were never contacted to request permission to copy books.
Many students are discipline problems, primarily the Special Education students. There have never been any full time education teachers. Those students roam the hallways, threaten the well behaved students and staff and if they are disciplined they claim it was based on the fact that they have an IEP or their race. They hve been excused for assualting students, both male and females, ruining the personal belongings of staff members, flushing feminine hygeine products down the toilets ruining the sewage system.
The students begin school each day by eating a pre packed meal. While most schools have cafeterias serving hot meals Achiever students are given fruit cups and pop tarts. Instead of sitting and eating breakfast they are forced to do early morning mind warm ups. ie more work to keep em quiet but instead they act out.
Throughout each class there are students on inappropriate websites, shouting, making fun of the teachers, storming out of class. Good students are rewarded with Scholar Dollars with which they can trade in for bags of chips.
There are no consistent discipline policies because often no one is around to enfore them. The Special Education students are never disciplined. Most of the students that are well behaved and have excellent grades have clearly stated that they are not happy because they do the same thing everyday and they cannot learn. Many students did not return for the 2019-2020 school year because the school is so terribly run.
Discipline consists of administrator lecturing the students as a group or taking a Special Education student out of a classroom and placing him/her with a non teaching staff member. Special Education are premitted to roam the hallways at any time. The
As far as STEM going on, there is none. There are no texts books for science or math, nor is there a curriculum. There are no technology classes or engineering. When there is an attempt to do school wide STEAM activities on Friday afternoons the students break the supplies they are given and run arround throwing these suppplies at other students.
Students are always expected to go on Khan Academy because it is free. There are no reading materials of interest for the students unless it is a book they can take a multiple choice test on. Those multiple choices tests are taken online and the students cheat off each other.
There is no recess because there is nowhere to go for recess. There is no courtyard or common area. The students are expected to sit in a classroom and play hot potato. There are many English as a Second Language students who receive no assistance, no translators, no ESOL classes, not even a dictionary. If a parent does not speak English well and needs a translator, one is never provided.
This school is NOT preparing students at all! The students are just barely scraping by. The majority of the parents only want a better education for their child. The only time each parent enters the school is when there is during parent teacher conferences where the child is translating for the parents or during an honor roll assembly. Once again the school staff cannot communicate with the Spanish speaking parents because there is no one bilingual working within the school.
No one knows exactly where the money is going in the school and no one ever asks. If the school with 172 students is receiving 10 million a year then where is it going? Where is the budget during the board meetings?
Why is it the baord members have never made a surprise visit to the school in order to see what goes on everyday? Why hasn't the Department of Education shut this school down yet? Instead of helping students the money is being taken and some folks running the school are getting quite rich off of it.
