Abe's of Maine Reviews

On Feb 25th 2020 we ordered a Canon EOS 90D with an 18-135 lens. The next day I got a call asking to verify my order because we placed the order with an AMEX to avoid fraud? OK, so here we go. Dave started asking me what I wanted with the camera? I told him the retail boxed Canon camera and Canon lens kit.

He shifted gears and asked me what battery I wanted (the 2 hour or 5 hour version), and I said I wanted the one that came in the retail box, with the charger, lens caps, body cap, neck strap, printed operators manual and Canon registration card (I've owned a few Canon's so I know what comes in the retail packaging). He said the model I ordered does not come with a strap, battery, booklet, registration card. I told him ALL retail Canon's come with those items. He said mine was an imported, or refreshed version, and he needed to know what battery and lens I wanted.

At this point I told him I only wanted the Canon 90D lens kit with the Canon ef-s 18-135mm lens, and was not buying an "Imported or Refreshed" version. At this point he came back with the same price as Bestbuy, so I said cancel my order. He then said he'd sell me the retail package I was asking for for their cost of $1,399. While that was a better deal than the $1,599 retail version from Bestbuy, by now all trust was blown. I again told him to cancel the order, and if our AMEX was charged that I'd notify AMEX (with the recording of our conversation) of their practices. I received an almost instant email cancellation.

I really feel bad for customers/shoppers who don't follow the finer details, or those who are easily duped by these types of shady companies. The price I ordered the kit was a too good to be true $1,296 shipped with no taxes. Too good to be true reared its ugly head again.

You'll see Abe isn't so Honest and according to my research has been ripping off customers for years and that their advertised “FREE SHIPPING” is anything but.

My wife and I purchased a top-of-the-line LG OLED (model # 55E8PUA) from Abe's of Maine. Unfortunately, it turned out that its display had been damaged in shipment or was defective....no one knows for sure when it occurred, but it was not operational when we attached the HDMI cable and plugged the unit in for our first time. We discovered it late on a Friday night after business hours and Abe’s would not reopen until Monday morning. So, beginning that Monday morning our worst fears were already starting. We found that it was nearly impossible to get through to Abe's of Maine's customer service so while we continued to make calls to them throughout the day, we also decided to look Abe’s up online.

Here we found an epiphany of complaints against them. Check out this link: https://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/abes-of-maine.html

During our internet expedition we also discovered that the name of the company's contact person for the BBB was a Ms. Lisa B. From thereon we concentrated on getting in touch with her. We made attempt after attempt to reach her, leaving messages when we would occasionally get through to her voicemail. When we did finally speak to Lisa B., she seemed very defensive and really showed no interest in anything that we were trying to explain to her regarding the damage to the TV. In fact, it seemed like the only thing that she did care about was trying to convince us that we were somehow responsible for that damage. She would consistently talk over us and didn’t seem to want to hear anything that we were trying to explain to her. She essentially told us that the $120 insurance policy, that their salesperson, “Hondas” had talked me into after the order had been placed, expired after I accepted the delivery.

I had discovered, after speaking to an authorized LG Service Tech, that damage to a multi-layer display such as this one may be detected by using a flashlight and viewing screen surface from and angle. Indeed, doing so revealed to us the crack that was in the upper right corner of the display. We see no way that such damage could have been detected without performing this procedure. In retrospect, I really wish that I had known about this before I accepted the delivery!

Again, we tried to call their "Customer Support" department numerous times only to hear the voice guidance bark out their hours of operation time after time, then we were put on hold and eventually the recorded voice came back on and said "goodbye" and disconnected the call.

I was growing quite weary of this and discovered that if I went through their sales line that this wouldn't happen as the sales staff would transfer your call to Customer Service if you were nice.

Lisa B. was not helpful in any way but finally told me that she would contact their "supplier" to see what they could do. I didn't hear back from her for a day, so I called Lisa Bereby and she explained to me that her "supplier" had agreed to send out a repair person to inspect the damage to LG OLED 55E8. Lisa promised me that she would re-contact their "supplier" at my request in order to get the name and phone number of the repair person to give to me so that I might arrange a convenient time for them to come out to inspect. I never heard back from Lisa or anyone else on this matter. We are now moving in to the second week since the TV was delivered and are no closer to a resolution than we were when we started calling Abe’s of Maine on Monday, January 28. Since the time that she had promised to get back to us on that day before end of business, “one way or the other”, with the technician’s contact info, we haven't heard a word from Ms. Bereby, her distributor, his "TV repair technician" or anyone else connected with Abe’s of Maine.

The manufacturer, LG won't do anything for us because, probably un-surprisingly, Abe's of Maine is not an AUTHORIZED LG DEALER. This company conduct is just so wrong on so many levels, running an unscrupulous operation in broad daylight is despicable.

I purchased a new Nikon 16mm Fisheye lens on https://www.abesofmaine.com/ at Abe's of Maine on 10/17/2017. I was called the next day by a guy who told me that in order to get the accessories that come with the lens it would be additional money and he talked me into the good deal and said lens was under full US warranty when I asked. I just sent the lens in for service to Nikon last week since it never really focused well and was told by Nikon that they cannot look at it or service the lens since it is a gray market lens. I was not told this by Abe's of Maine and after contacting them twice I am filing a complaint. I am now out $800.

ABES OF MAINE has a very legit looking website and since they were based in the USA I never doubted them....Boy was I wrong.

HERE IS MY STORY: I ordered a Canon Powershot D30 camera from Abes Of Maine Online website 3 weeks ago. Long story short the camera never was delivered. When I filled out and submitted the contact us form no one answered back. When I called the Customer service number on the Abes Of Mauine website website the shadyness really began to reveal: The customer service phone number rings 3 times then disconnects. I tried this for several days with no other luck.

Then finally I tried calling their SALES number , and guess what, a person answered ( a man ). Once I told him why I was calling he put me on hold and eventually on through to someone he said could help me. This customer service person ( a lady ) told me the camera was back ordered and asked if I would like a call from them when it comes in. I knew this was a lie, because I had just spoke with the sales team at CANON and they informed me they stopped making the camera last year. They said if ABES OF MAINE, or any company for that matter, is till selling them it's only because they have some left in stock from last year.

So after hearing this Lie from This lady at ABES OF MAINE I assked her to cancel my order and to NOT CHARGE MY AMEX CARD. But with in 1 hour of hanging up the phone with ABES OF MAINE two mysterious charges were attempted on my AMEX card from a company called " AMC CSTR GCARD ". And not so coincidentally they bill out of Maine. Luckily my AMEX card fraud department picked up on the fraudulent charges in tiime to stop them. AMEX told me they will be pursing this fraud. In the meantime I will wait for AMEX to send me a new card as my old card was hacked by ABES OF MAINE online customer sales/service people.

BOTTOM LINE: DEFINITELY DO NOT GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO TO ANY "ABES OF MAINE EMPLYEES, THEY HAVE CROOKS WORKING FOR THEM AND THEY STEAL YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO AND ATTEMPT TO DERAUD YOU.

Beware Online Shoppers! Abe's of Maine is an electronics store offering great prices for televisions, camera's and other home electronics, but be advised the the prices are FAKE PRICES! The actaul cost for the items you order are much higher! Once you place your order, you get a "confirmation call", where they inform you that the item you ordered, is very different from what is described on the website.

In my case, I ordered a Samsung 65" Curved QLED 4K Smart TV, Model QN65Q8C. When I got my confirmation call, I was told that the tv I ordered was a "commercial" model, that had less colors than the "residential" model, and it came with no warranty at all. Mind you that NONE of this information is displayed anywhere on there website, although any legitimate retailer would make sure it was displayed prominently!

If I wanted the residential model, with a 1 year warranty, then I would have to pay $600 MORE! Once I recovered from the initial shock, I told him that there was no way I was going to pay an extra 6 bills, at which time he offered me a $100 discount and their "white glove" delivery service, still totalling an extra $500 over what I had agreed to pay.

He also kept going on about how this tv was worth $3000 ($1100 more than what I agreed to pay), and that I should be happy that he was giving me $500 of that price! I had to tell him to cancel my order at least 5 times before he reluctantly did so, rudely, and then hung up the phone without so much as a "have a nice day".

How on earth are these people even in business doing this kind of thing? They are rude, tricky, aggressive, and totally dishonest!

I have purchsed things on the internet for many years. I have even heard of ABE's OF MAINE and maybde even pourchased something from them many years ago. So when I saw a LG Signature C7 Series OLED65C7P 65" OLED Smart TV - 4K UltraHD television on their site for $1,996.00 I researched it then ordered it to be sure it was the same current model LG and other sell. THe preview page (before psyment) showed it came with FREE shipping and the total price was as stated $1,996.00.

I completed the order and received a confrimation from ABE'S both on their website and via email for exactlty that price.

A few hours later I recieved a email from ABE'S asking me to confrim the order but calling them which I did. I was asked ot contact Jeff Steves at extention 202.

The name said it was Steve and who got on the phone asking me to confirm the order which I did. Hre started with asking and suggesting insurance just incase it breaks. I asked how much. He told me and I thought he said $23.88. My hearding isn't that bad but I repeated it to him saying "for 23 bucks sure go ahead and do it." Then he asked is he wanted any HDMI or Mounting gear to which I said no. He said okay I'm going to charge your card. I said okay, and the we talked about deliverly dates. When I got the charge and email confrimation a few minutes later it was an addtional $388.00 dollars bringing the total cost to $2384.00 for the TV. I call him back but got his maching and I left a message saying I don't need the insurance and to take it off. I had purchased it with American Express and the card that I have covers me for 90 days from the date of purchase for any breakage so the insurance wasn't necessary.

I thought it was best to call him back to confirm that I did not want the insurance. This time he answered the phone. He told me that was the price. I said, no, the price you have advertised is $1997.00. He told me listen you are from New York, I'm from New York and that is what it is. I said nicely once again that the price he had advertised was $1,996.00 and that it what I'm paying. He said "I'm not going to play games with you, the price is 2,384.00 or go buy it someplace else."

I was not rude and just said that is not what you have advertised. He said, "to bad, if oyu want it that is the price. If oyu don't want it I'll cancel it."

Wht kind of scam is this that allows someone to advertise one thing and then do something else not honoring the advertised price.

DONT NOT DO BUSINESS wtih these people. They obviously don't honor what they place on their website where they use low prices (claiming to be a sale) to reel you in. Be aware!

There are so many complaints on this business, it is unbeliveable they are still in business.

Don't buy from Abes of Maine, these guys are a bait & switch operation, they're method of business is scheming people with extra fees, they call to verify your card but also they will add charges and bill you anyway without notification even if you decline to accept the item, they are ruthless and they have a department for chargeback, they apparently have a lot of angry customers that have declined payments where they are horrible over the phone and have the worst record on for online reviews. Ordered the LG OLED65C6P HDTV from their web site. The shipping was free, even the wall mount included in the sale.

Received a phone call from a rep next day stating now I have to add handling and insurance fees. Otherwise the processing will be 2 weeks and although there are 5 TV in stock, they are not guaranteed to ship.

I am cancelling and buying locally.

I purchased from Abes of Maine before and they were quite reliable but it looks like they became a scam site lately.

In 2010 I ordered a television from Abe's of Maine. I had to call and confirm my order, which ended up being an up-sell, but some of the things I needed, so I agreed.

This year, they were having a Black Friday deal on a television I was interested in, a Samsung KS8500 series 4K curved screen in 65". So, I placed the order online, from this page: abesofmaine.com/Samsung_UN65KS8500F_-_65_Curved_LED_Smart_TV_-_4K_UltraHD_1028782.html

This was on November 25. On December 4, I received the email requesting I call to confirm the order and speak with Jeff.

Today, December 5, I call and Jeff tells me that they "over-sold" the number of televisions they had in stock and I'd have to pay another $400 for the "residential" model of the television, which is what's sold by other retailers. The one I ordered was supposedly the "commercial" model and was made more cheaply and didn't have all the same features as the residential model. The page makes no mention of the set being a commercial model or otherwise, and, if you search the manufacturer part number on the page (UN65KS8500FXZA), you get the same television set told by Amazon, Best Buy, and several other retailers.

I felt like this was false and Jeff suggested that I can cancel the order and call back if I want to purchase. So I had them cancel the order.

Basically, beware this company and their bait and switch tactics. What was a pleasant experience 6 years ago was not so much this year.

I'll need to monitor my credit card statement to ensure I don't get charged for this.
