In September 2016, at 90 years of age, my mother was approached by a salesman from ABC Seamless of Billings for the installation of new gutters, soffits and fascia for the family home. It took almost a year for the project to begin- July, 2017- and too late for me to cancel the contract signed by my mother. There were problems almost from Day 1 with a leaking gutter and other issues.
I attempted to get repairs and issues addressed ever since that time-- sending several emails, photos, and videos (of leaks and leaking gutters) to Larry Grayson, owner of ABC Seamless of Billings (838 Mullowney Lane, Billings MT 59101, 406-256-5477). I continued those efforts even after my mother passed away at the age of 92—the gutter still leaking all over the patio. We were met with denials, delays, phone calls not returned, and an attempt at a half-assed repair that only served to stop leaves in the gutter, from where it then overflowed.
During a warm day in December 2019, I noticed a small stream of water running down from beneath the soffit and across the brick on the front of the house. That had not happened prior to the work done by ABC Seamless.
Late in the fall of 2020, I had the siding replaced on the home due to hail damage. The siding contractor stated that due to the "shoddy" installation of the gutters, soffits and fascia, he would have to remove all of it in order to install the new siding, because the soffit and fascia were “installed on top of the siding”, making siding repair or replacement impossible without first entirely removing them. The contractor stated that there was “no venting as well” at the soffits.
The lack of venting could very likely have ended up causing even more damage to the structure as time went by. The cost for the new replacement gutters, soffit and fascia was almost $7,000.00—an extra burden to the homeowner and the insurer. A pergola on the back patio, attached closely to the gutters, soffits and fascia, also had to be removed. The estimates for its replacement have ranged from about $3,500 to $14,000.00 (with concrete work-- due to freezing, thawing and heaving from water dripping onto it from the leaking gutter overhead).
I believe that the work done by ABC Seamless of Billings was inferior in every way and that their “shoddy” installation methods resulted in the additional costs of almost $7,000.00 for the gutters, soffits and fascia replacement.
I believe that the company misrepresented themselves as to their abilities to correctly install the product, the training of their employees, ability to complete the job in a timely and correct manner, the quality of the completed project and materials, and were tardy/hesitant/negligent in addressing major installation flaws when they were raised by the homeowner and the contractor. This does not include the hours and hours that I have spent in trying to get a remedy for this situation, and I can see from the many post on social media that the work done by this company has also been an issue with other homeowners.
Needless to say, this also impacts the insurance companies that provide coverage for our homes. My homeowner’s premiums were due to increase 74%. Damage and poor installation and follow through is driving up the costs to homeowners and insurers, but it is the homeowners who are impacted the most because premiums are just raised to cover it and homeowners are often left picking up the cost to repair the mess or hire a new contractor, as stated in multiple complaints against the company in various postings. Mr. Grayson’s efforts to deflect blame and to discredit any contractors or homeowners who point out his shoddy techniques, is despicable.
Considering the number of complaints online, and those that we can assume have been ‘silenced’, or 'voted with their feet', how is it possible that this company is still allowed to do business in Montana? However, I am very grateful for the assistance of Emily at the Montana Department of Justice (MT DOJ, Office of Consumer Protection, Helena, MT, 59620, 406-444-4500).
