AAAA Self Storage Reviews

  • Sep 16, 2015

AAAA Self Storage Mgmt. Company took over our storage company, and stooped accepting our credit card-auto-payments. They then started racking up late charges for non-payment! They sent one letter to an old address of ours which was not delivered (They are required by lien law to send a letters to our Current Primary Address, AND Secondary Address). They then sold everything at auction. They did not provide the legally required detailed inventory of our property and they did not call any of the four phone numbers that were part of our contract.

This is one of the largest Self Storage Companies in the United States with dozens of storage facilities in several states.

The nightmare began last year, when Sara called Charles Town Storage to update her credit card information. AAAA Self Storage answered the phone. Sara was told by AAAA Self Storage that all of her treasured possessions were sold by AAAA six weeks before. “That's impossible! What happened to Charles Town Storage? Why didn't you notify me?!?”

Sara was told that when AAAA Self Storage took over, their new computer system was not compatible with the existing system so AAAA lost Sara's contact information, stopped accepting her credit card payments, and then sold everything she owned!

Sara's husband David tried everything to recover what treasures might still be saved. Mr. Stuart Trask the District Manager for AAAA Self storage wouldn't tell him anything except that he got in touch with the buyer, everything was sold and nothing could be recovered. Our Paintings! My grandfathers gold pocket watch! Where did the buyer sell these things? Please help me, I have to try to recover what I can! Mr. Trask wouldn't tell David where or how the buyer sold his most treasured possessions. David tried contacting the owner of the company, placing ads offering rewards to recover distinctive paintings, checking auction sites like Ebay. Nothing worked. Finally David contacted dozens of attorneys and found to his surprise that none of them were interested in representing a regular consumer that was so clearly wronged by a large company. So for the first time in his life David decided to sue. Filing a lawsuit on your own behalf is daunting task. The Circuit Court of Jefferson County tells you to briefly describe in clear language why you are suing, and pay a filing fee. David did this. It seemed simple enough. In response he got a 6-page response from AAAA Self Storage's attorney's citing arcane rules of the court that basically said it was all David and Sara's fault. The letter claimed that the Circuit Court of Jefferson County WV, didn't have jurisdiction and that the court should throw out David and Sara's lawsuit.

David thought he was entitled to his day in court. He thought that a judge and jury would hear his case and now he was worried that his lawsuit against AAAA Self Storage would be summarily thrown out. He tried calling the County Clerk's office they couldn't tell him how he could respond to this 6-page letter from AAAA's attorneys. He tried calling the legal aid hotline in West Virginia. They said he would probably get a hearing but that the judge might just summarily dismiss the whole thing. He asked an online attorney “How can I amend my pleading to address this letter from their lawyers” and got no response.

While researching this case David came across the following complaint on Yelp

What a joke of a business! I have been a long time customer and was locked out. The business changed their software which eliminated my auto-pay for July. They said they sent email notices but I didn't receive one. No written communication! There are a lot of units with lockout locks which I suspect are in the same situation. Then they had the AUDACITY to charge a $20 late fee! I'll be moving out ASAP. Sheer luck that I happened to stop by and find out.

David and Sara now seriously wonder if regular people are still protected by the law from companies that don't follow the law. Is it legal for a big corporation to steal a family’s most treasured possessions, and sell everything they really care about? Has our legal system been co-opted by unethical corporations? Can a corporation stop accepting your auto-payments, and then legally sell your property to “...bring more money to their bottom lines?”
