Purchased a used 2000 396 Carver Boat from Colony Marine with approx 300 hrs in 2005. In 2008 while piloting in calm water the boat just stopped abruptly; used one remaining engine to seek safe harbor. Contacted local Caver dealer, very laxed, says no idea what could have happen. Due to showing no interest in our problem, took boat to a certified mercrusier dealer. They did extensive research. Information came back the boat had 3 engines already replaced. (Was not disclosed by dealer or survey). mechanic says a problem exist with the risers being too low, allows for water to get in engine When sudden stopping. We had the engine replaced and both engines retro fitted to raise the risers thinking we solved the problem. Well it's August 2015 and another engine failure. Insurance company saying its normal wear. 3 engines replaced prior to 2005, 4th engine replaced 2008, now 2015, we need another engine! The boat has less than 700 hours total. Keep in mind the boat came with 2 new enginEs, 3 replacements within 5 years, another replaced in 2008, now 2015 we need another engine. Mechanics are saying the 7.4 Horizon Mercuiser was a faulty engine, of course no recalls, and Carver design put too much weight in this model year for this type engine. The only thing we know as a consumer is the boat is very unreliable. We bought a Caver because we had several friends who own 1987, 1988, 1998 all are still running great on the same original factory installed engine. When our engine failed this year a 1989 was traveling with us. Caver and Mercuiser need to acknowledge something is wrong. We were in the middle of a very narrow freighter channel when both engines stalled. After a harrowing "mayday" call we got one engine started. i wrote Carver, no response, we only wanted assistance in helping our mechanic make the boat safe. I am also writing Mercuiser now. If others have had similar problems, i am interested in Making the boat safe. No one can be expected to continue to replace engines only to have them fail. Can anyone offer a solution? If any mechanics can offer their expert opinion to explain this is not normal wear and tear it would be greatoy appreciated. Our insurance company paid for the 2008 engone. We paid several thousand dollars to increase the risers. I'm interested in filing suit as a last result. Just a know, boat is well maintained, inside stored, all service records, had the boat turned up and sea trail prior to the trip we lost the engine on. Also had a complete survey on the boat 2014.
